First Day of Cambodian Senate Election Campaign Begins Peacefully

Phnom Penh: The National Election Committee (NEC) declared a smooth and peaceful start to the two-week campaign for the 5th Senate Election in Cambodia. According to their press release this evening, the day unfolded without violence and ensured security, safety, and social order.

The NEC commended the positive cooperation of local and relevant authorities in facilitating a responsible campaign environment.

This observation was highlighted by the National Election Committee (NEC) in a press statement released this evening, which praised the effective collaboration of local authorities and security personnel.

The statement detailed that the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) initiated their campaign across all eight regions, while the Khmer Will Party engaged in outreach by conducting meetings and broadcasting their political agenda via loudspeakers at their party offices and members' residences.

It was noted that the other two political parties in the fray, the FUNCINPEC Party and the National Power Party, have not yet commenced any campaign-related activities.

The campaign period for the 5th Senate Election is set to conclude on February 23rd. The election itself is scheduled for February 25th and will see the participation of 11,747 eligible voters. This electorate comprises 125 members (17 of whom are female) of the National Assembly, and 11,622 commune/Sangkat councilors, including 2,568 females. The smooth start to the campaign period is a hopeful indicator of a democratic and orderly electoral process.
